Shakespeare comes to Berwick this summer with the HandleBards

23 July 2026

This August, two of Berwick’s most iconic historic venues will become the stage for an unforgettable celebration of Shakespeare as the award-winning HandleBards return with two spectacular performances.

Known for their fast-paced, hilarious and accessible productions, the HandleBards have built a reputation as one of the UK’s favourite touring theatre companies. Blending live music, audience interaction and plenty of comedy, they bring Shakespeare to life in a way that’s entertaining for seasoned theatre lovers and newcomers alike.

Two unique venues, two unforgettable productions

The first performance sees As You Like It take over The Straw Yard at Berwick Barracks, transforming the outdoor space into a magical setting for one of Shakespeare’s best-loved comedies.

Audiences are invited to arrive early, enjoy a drink from the bar and soak up the atmosphere before settling in for an evening of open-air theatre beneath the summer sky.

Later in the month, the company returns with Macbeth, performed inside Berwick Parish Church. The church’s historic setting provides the perfect backdrop for Shakespeare’s gripping tale of ambition, power and betrayal, creating an atmospheric experience unlike any traditional theatre performance.

Making the most of Berwick’s remarkable spaces

These performances are part of The Maltings’ growing programme of events across Berwick’s heritage venues, bringing nationally acclaimed artists to the town while showcasing some of its most remarkable locations.

Daniel Cox, Programme Manager at The Maltings, said:

“We’re delighted to welcome the HandleBards to Berwick as part of our growing programme of performances across some of the town’s most iconic heritage venues. The Straw Yard has quickly established itself as a vibrant space for live performance, offering audiences a unique way to experience theatre, while Berwick Parish Church provides a haunting and atmospheric setting for Macbeth. These productions perfectly demonstrate how we can bring nationally recognised companies to Berwick while making the most of the incredible places we have on our doorstep.”
