Where Stories Come to Life
Our programme brings together film, visual art, performance and creative activity – creating opportunities to experience culture in different ways, across Berwick and beyond.
From the latest cinema releases and special screenings to exhibitions, live events and hands-on workshops, everything we do is designed to spark curiosity and bring people together. You might watch something new, take part in something creative, or encounter something unexpected in the everyday spaces of the town.
Alongside our public programme, we work with artists and partners to create opportunities for people to take part – from youth theatre and artist-led workshops to talks, residencies and projects with schools and communities.
We create welcoming, inclusive spaces where culture feels open, relevant and part of everyday life.
Artists, Residencies and New Work
Supporting artists and developing new work is at the heart of our programme.
Through residencies, commissions and partnerships, we invite artists to spend time in Berwick – responding to its landscapes, histories and communities while creating new work to be shared locally and beyond.
Our current residencies and commissions form part of the Living Barracks: Berwick Shines engagement programme, unfolding in locations across the town.

On Screen.
Our film programme brings people together to experience stories on screen – from the latest releases and special event broadcasts to one-off screenings and curated moments across the year.
Screenings take place at Maltings Cinema at Berwick Barracks – an intimate 96-seat cinema set within the historic Barracks Mob Store. Once used to house military equipment, the early 20th-century building has been reimagined as a shared cultural space, where past and present meet through film.
Our year-round programme is carefully curated to offer a mix of new releases, distinctive titles and shared viewing experiences, creating a regular rhythm of cinema in the town.
Alongside this, we work with key community partners including Berwick Literary Festival and Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival to present special events and festival moments across the year – adding new perspectives and opportunities to experience film in different ways.
Since opening in October 2024, the cinema has become a welcoming place to watch, discover and share film together. You can find out what’s on and book tickets online.
In Frame.
Our exhibition programme invites you to spend time with ambitious and inspiring visual art, through a changing programme of exhibitions, events and creative activity.
We present work by leading British and Scottish artists alongside contemporary voices, often exploring connections between art, place and people. Many of our exhibitions draw inspiration from Northumberland and the Scottish Borders – offering new perspectives on the landscapes and stories that shape this region.
Recent exhibitions have included Lowry and the Sea, Anne Redpath and Her Circle, Turner: Northern Exposure and John Timberlake: Berwick in Sequence – reflecting the breadth of artists and stories within our programme.
Our exhibitions take place at the Granary Gallery, with The Gymnasium set to reopen in 2027 as part of the next chapter for The Maltings.
Alongside exhibitions, our residency programme supports artists to live and work in Berwick, creating new work in dialogue with the town and its communities.
In The Making.
Our creative programme offers opportunities for people of all ages to take part, learn and create – making culture something you don’t just experience, but actively shape.
From regular groups and workshops to one-off projects and holiday activities, there are many ways to get involved. You might join a youth theatre group, take part in artist-led workshops, explore new skills through creative sessions, or experience hands-on activities designed for families and young people.
We work closely with artists, schools and community partners to create inclusive, welcoming spaces where people can build confidence, develop ideas and connect with others through creativity.
Based at Maltings at Hide Hill and taking place in locations across Berwick, this strand of our programme brings creativity into everyday spaces – supporting people to discover their own creative voice and be part of the town’s cultural life.
Maltings at Hide Hill is supported by Create Berwick and hosts artist-led heritage and creative activity as part of the Living Barracks project.
On Stage
Our live performance programme brings theatre, music, comedy and spoken word to Berwick – creating shared experiences that bring people together.
While our future home on Eastern Lane is under redevelopment, our programme continues to unfold across the town. We work with venues and partners to present performances in a range of spaces – from familiar settings to unexpected places – keeping live performance at the heart of Berwick’s cultural life.
From touring productions to one-off events and locally rooted work, our programme offers opportunities to experience live performance in different ways, in spaces that feel connected to the town and its communities.
